2019 Esperance Grower Tour
Last week saw an intrepid group of SCF members ably led by R&D Co-ordinator, Nathan Dovey, head to Esperance on a three day trek to check out what is happening in farming on the eastern side of the South Coast!
Day 1 of the tour saw them visiting Stott Redman at Hopetoun. Many discussions were had, with too much water usually a problem but not in 2019. The first day finished with Nigel Metz taking them through Lucky Bay Brewing, with the obligatory mandatory beer tasting of course!
Day 2 and the first stop of the morning was Mark Wandel at Scaddan. A great insight into managing a large scale operation. Got a bit of a faba bean masterclass too. The second stop was with Brad Egan, also at Scaddan. Plenty of soil amelioration going on there. The group also saw some tillage radish and vetch as part of a triple break crop.
Final day and the last stop was Mic Fel's place before heading back to Albany. They chatted about harvest logistics, banding N, chasing 1% efficiency gains/savings, alpha disc and Mic’s wish to find an on farm lime source.
All in all a great 3 days of learning and well worth the time out of everyone's busy schedules. Thanks to Grains Research and Development Corporation for funding support of this study tour.
