Wheat Field Walk

Dual purpose wheat field walk

On Friday July 20 SCF held a field walk at Curwen's long season wheat demonstration paddock. Growers heard from SCF R&D Co-ordinator, Nathan Dovey, on the progress of SCF's dual purpose wheat project funded by DPIRD's Grower Group R&D Fund, as well as links to our Meat & Livestock Australia producer demonstration sites on sheep production from dual purpose crops. Early sowing of these long season wheats is a key factor to being able to produce good quality early feed. At harvest we will be able to see what impact early grazing on these crops has on final crop yield.

The paddock looked at was sown to DS Pascal and Longsword on April 13, and sheep have been grazing half the paddock since June 17. Nathan discussed the assessments taken so far and plans for the rest of the season. The un-grazed section also includes a farm-scale variety trial including Longsword, DS Pascal, ADV.11.9419 and ADV.08.008.
