SCF held a Snails Forum on August 2, preceding the GRDC Regional Cropping Solutions Network open meeting at Green Range Country Club. Attended by over 30 growers, the forum heard from local DAFWA researcher Svetlana Micic, and SARDI researcher, Michael Nash, as well as local growers, SCF chair Scott Smith, and SCF member, John Howard, on the snails issue on their farm and what they have been doing to combat them. We also heard from SCF CEO Christine Kershaw on some of the market implications, and SCF Senior Agronomist Jake McGuire spoke to on-farm management of snails. SCF currently has two projects looking at the snails issue, one funded by GRDC's RCSN looking at cost effective snail baiting methods, and another funded through COGGO to put together a resource package on snail and slug mitigation and collaboration with other grower groups across the southern agricultural region to better make resources available to growers.
